Blackwell Botanicals
11:30am  to 12:30pm

Lecture Description: “Pressing Botanicals – Harvesting Nature’s Bounty”

The natural world is my palette, and the kaleidoscope of pressed plant material is my chosen medium. As a botanical artist, my mission is to connect viewers with nature through preserving and pressing plant material.  Every specimen has a story or evokes a feeling that ties us to our natural world. My hope is to inspire the viewer to discover the beauty at the intersection of art and our delicate ecosystem.

Anne Blackwell Thompson

Anne Blackwell Thompson is a botanical artist based in Richmond, Virginia. She embraces the centuries-old art form of pressed botanicals by preserving foliage and flowers and creating unique compositions. Her work reflects a culmination of her years of botanical study, formal training in studio art and art history, and lifelong love of the natural world.

After apprenticing with botanical artist Stuart Thornton in Italy, Anne began building an extensive herbarium and founded Blackwell Botanicals in 2010. Her finished pieces juxtapose tradition with a modern flair, reflecting contemporary design aesthetics.

Anne’s work has been featured in VerandaMILIEUSouthern Living, and Garden & Gun. She has served as Artist in Residence at Tuckahoe Plantation in Virginia, Ladew Topiary Gardens, and Brookgreen Gardens. In addition to working with private collectors, she collaborates with designers and landscape architects on large-scale commercial and hospitality projects.
